Join us Friday, October 23rd from 7–10PM for our annual Grown-Up Halloween Party: three glorious, child-free hours of costumes, cocktails, music, dancing, and whatever other spooky nonsense we can fit into one building.
We’re talking round-robin jam session. Nonstop silent disco. Games. Costume contest. Raffle prizes. Questionable dance moves. Excellent decisions. Terrible decisions. We support your journey.

Join artist <a href="https://natashaguy.com/About" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Natasha Guy</a>&nbsp;for a workshop that will use collage as a way to explore historical images.&nbsp;
2026 marks not just the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, but also the 200th anniversary of photography. In honor of these celebrations, participants will use historical images from <a href="https://libwww.freelibrary.org/locations/departments/print-and-picture-collection" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">the Print and Picture Collection</a> to compose a collage and discuss what they've made as a group, exploring topics like how a city pictures itself, how photographs build collective memory, and the ways that history can be reopened through collage. The workshop will be held in the <a href="https://libwww.freelibrary.org/locations/departments/art-department" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Art Department</a> at <a href="https://libwww.freelibrary.org/locations/parkway-central-library" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Parkway Central Library</a> and will run from 5 pm to 7:30 pm. No experience is needed and all materials will be provided.&nbsp;

From Philadelphia favorites Applied Mechanics comes a spectacular new show, RUN BEN RUN: a maniacal, surreal satire starring famous Bens from throughout American history, from Ben Franklin to Ben Affleck. Thrown together on a film set with the goal of making a movie about the John Gast painting American Progress, the Bens wrestle with identity, fame, and the versions of American identity that live within each of us. The play surrounds the audience with a panoply of different offerings from the different Bens. Will Ben Affleck be able to finish his movie without his star, Ben Franklin? Will Ben Vereen dance his way out of danger? Will Benedict Arnold clear his name? And will Benito Antonio Ocasio Cortez (Bad Bunny) finally write the song to bring us together? The Bens begin to wonder: can they rewrite history? Or should they just… run away?
Using drag, choreography, pastiche, and an absurd original script, some of Philly’s favorite performers craft a spectacle that tears apart the underlying assumptions about American Progress.

Photography and the American West have long been culturally intertwined. Since the 19th century, iconic photographs of western landscapes — think of Carleton Watkins’s Yosemite views — have been read as inherently environmentalist. Challenging this assumption, Ecologies of Photography in the American West examines the medium’s role in documenting, profiting from, and transforming ecosystems across its varied geographies. This book brings together a diverse range of scholars and artists to trace photography’s roots in the earth and its entanglement with resource extraction and ecological rights. Timely and expansive in scope, the volume reframes the history of the region and foregrounds photography’s complicity—as well as its potential—in shaping environmental understanding. It speaks to anyone attuned to the urgent environmental conversations defining the contemporary American West. The co-editors will address the book's relevance to the PAFA exhibition, the process of collaboration, and their hopes for the field. This special program features a talk and conversation with art historians Monica Bravo and Carolin Görgen as they explore how photographs of the American West in the context of A Nation of Artists. This program is virtual only—watch the live stream on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@PafaOrg/featuredhttps://www.youtube.com/@PafaOrg/featured" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">YouTube</a>. About Monica Bravo
Monica Bravo is Assistant Professor of the History of Photography in the Department of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University. She is the author of Greater American Camera: Making Modernism in Mexico, published by Yale University Press in June 2021. It was shortlisted for the Charles Rufus Morey Book Award from the College Art Association. Her next book, “Silver Pacific: Early Western American Photography and its Mining Economy,” is under advance contract with Princeton University Press and has been supported by numerous fellowships. Publications related to this project have appeared in the journals American Art, Art Bulletin, Art History, and Photographica.
About Carolin Görgen
Carolin Görgen is Associate Professor of American Studies at Sorbonne Université in Paris, France.
A historian of photography and the American West, she is the author of The California Camera Club: Collective Visions in the Making of the American West (Oklahoma, 2025). Her research on photo networks across the American West has received support, among others, from the Terra Foundation for American Art, the Huntington Library, and the Amon Carter Museum. In France, she serves on the editorial board of the journal Photographica.
