Philadelphia-based food-rescue nonprofit Sharing Excess is recovering an estimated 4,000 pounds of surplus pumpkins from several Pennsylvania farms and distributing them for free to local families and kids this week ahead of Halloween. The pumpkins otherwise would have been left unharvested and tilled back into the soil after going unsold. Instead, Sharing Excess is redirecting them into the community through a series of free neighborhood giveaways, offering families a chance to pick out pumpkins while highlighting how seasonal surplus can be put to good use rather than wasted.
