Off-Duty Sheriff's Deputy Involved In Shooting Of Suspected Car Thief: Police

An off-duty member of the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office and his son shot at a teenager who was trying to steal a vehicle, police said.

PHILADELPHIA — An off-duty member of the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office was involved in the shooting of a teenager who was trying to steal a vehicle early Tuesday morning, according to Philadelphia Police.

The shooting happened at about 3:32 a.m. on the 7300 block of Bunting Place.

Authorities said it all began when an off-duty sheriff's deputy saw a person trying to steal a vehicle. The deputy and a family member, reportedly his son, confronted the person, and police said they both shot at him.

Action News reports the suspect, 17 years old, was shot twice in the left leg and fled in a vehicle.

The suspect was taken to Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was placed in custody. There, police said he was found with tools typically used in vehicle break-ins, according to NBC10.

Authorities have not released the suspect's identity or information on his medical condition. Charges are pending, however, police said.

No one else was hurt in the incident.
