Eagles Could Clinch Playoffs With Cowboys Loss Thursday Night

The Eagles may not have to wait until Sunday night's game against the Seahawks to clinch the playoffs.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — With five weeks still remaining in the regular season, the Philadelphia Eagles have the chance to clinch a playoff berth this Sunday night against the Seattle Seahawks. However, it might not even come to that.

If divisional rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, fall to the Washington Redskins on Thursday night, it would also guarantee the Birds a playoff spot.

At 10-1, the Birds are owners of the best record in the NFL and are widely considered the favorites to win the NFC Conference Championship. From there, they narrowly trail the New England Patriots as booking favorites to win the Super Bowl. Per Vegas Insider, the defending champion Patriots are 5/2 favorites, while the Eagles are second at 4/1 favorites.

The Cowboys kick off against the Redskins at 8:25 p.m. for Thursday Night Football. The Cowboys have home field advantage and they considered the slight favorites. However, Cowboys advantage, if they have one, is tenuous at best, and that’s good news for Eagles fans looking to celebrate the Birds’ inevitable playoff clinching early.

The Cowboys have lost three straight games, after getting out to a 5-3 start. They remain without the services of star running back Ezekiel Elliott, whose six game suspension for domestic violence charges began in Week 10.

And perhaps most importantly, the Redskins are riding a seven-game winning streak against the Cowboys. They’re coming off a win over the Giants last week and two tough, close losses against the Saints and the Vikings. The Redskins shouldn’t be underestimated, playing against a division rival on national television and fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Eagles, meanwhile, will travel to Seattle to face off against the 7-4 Seahawks. The Eagles have won nine straight, in large part thanks to the emergence of Carson Wentz as a bona fide star and MVP-candidate. The second year quarterback owns a 73.4 QB rating through 11 games, the third best rating in the NFL, according to ESPN.

He’ll be up against one of the more solid defenses in the NFC with the Seahawks, who have allowed the fourth fewest points of all defenses in the conference this year.

NFL.com points more specifically to the matchup between the Eagles running backs and the Seahawks defensive ends as crucial to the outcome.

The Seahawks hold a lifetime 8-7 record against the Eagles, including three straight wins. Most recently, they beat the Eagles 26-15 in Week 10 last year.
