Wawa's Greater Philadelphia roots go back to 1902, when entrepreneur George Wood took an interest in dairy farming. Wood moved from New Jersey to Delaware County and started a processing plant in the community of Wawa — split between Middletown Township and Chester Heights Borough.

As the home milk delivery business declined, George's grandson, Grahame Wood, shifted the business to retail. The first Wawa Food Market opened on April 16, 1964, in Folsom.
