Greased Pole Climbing Event Coming To Philly In July

The Red Bull Championship Run tasks Philadelphians with climbing a greased pole. Don't miss the event on July 27.

PHILADELPHIA — A greased pole to many people is just that, a slick and slimy rod they have no interest in. But to Philadelphians, a greased pole is a challenge and call to action.

And Red Bull is giving Philadelphians the opportunity to show their greased pole climbing skills.

The Red Bull Championship Run will take place July 27 at Spruce Street Harbor Park in Philadelphia. The competition will begin at 5:15 p.m. at The Estuary at the Sea Philly Docks.

And this run will task participants with climbing a greased pole.

The format is simple: grab the flag and advance to the next round," according to Red Bull. "Fail to grab the flag and you'll be relegated to the sidelines, watching in anticipation for your chance at redemption next year. It’s a test of speed, skill and sheer determination."

One hundred people will be able to take on the challenge, competing in heats of 20 people vying for the title of Philly's best greased pole climber and awarded a prize. Details on the prize have not been released.

Whoever grabs the flag the fastest will be declared the winner.

If no one grabs the flag during the main competition, the participant who travels the furthest in the shortest amount of time will be declared the winner.

The pole will be re-greased every 20 runners.
