PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter has been fined $57,222 by the NFL for spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during the season opener last week, the league announced this week.

The punishment will be restricted to a fine and Carter will avoid any further suspensions or punishments from the league, meaning he is eligible to play in this Sunday's game against the Chiefs in Kansas City. The league said they viewed his ejection as a one-game suspension, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.

"Because Carter was disqualified before participating in a single play, the suspension is considered to have been served in Week 1 and he will forfeit his game check," the league said in a statement. "The NFL Players Association has informed the NFL that Carter will not contest the discipline and has waived his right to appeal."

The incident occurred just after the opening kickoff, when Carter thought that Prescott had spit towards him moments before, according to USA Today. Prescott said, however, that he had spit near a rookie on his own team as a joke.

Video captured Carter confronting Prescott moments later, and then spitting on the chest of Prescott's jersey as a referee, standing feet away, watched.

Carter was instantly ejected from the game before he played a single snap, marking a bizarre start to the 2025-26 season just after the Birds had unveiled their Super Bowl 59 banner.

Speculation had been rampant that Carter, a 2024 Pro Bowler, might receive a further suspension. However, the announcement this week means he'll join the team for the Super Bowl rematch the Chiefs on Sunday at 4:25 p.m.
