Jimmy Rollins Named Special Advisor To Phillies

One of the all-time franchise greats is back home. J-Roll has been hired by the Phillies as a special advisor, the team announced Tuesday.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — One of the all-time franchise greats is home.

Jimmy Rollins, one of the most accomplished athletes in Philadelphia history, has been hired as a special advisor, the team announced.

J-Roll, now 40, spent 15 of his 17 active years in the major leagues with the Phillies, where he became the all-time franchise leader in hits, won the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 2007, led the Phillies to the World Series championship in 2008, and was among the game's best shortstops for much of his career.

According to the club announcement, Rollins' new role will involve both baseball and business activities, ranging from working with players to representing the club on various public relations fronts.

"It goes without saying that Jimmy was a huge part of the team's success during the five-year run of division titles and he is one of the greatest players to wear our uniform," Phillies executive vice president David Buck said in a statement. "His acumen for both business and baseball makes this a natural fit. We are excited to have him back."

Rollins will likely be with the club during spring training, and will also meet with sponsors and stadium suite owners, engage with fans, and speak with members of the community.

The Phillies will honor Rollins on May 4, which has formally been announced as Jimmy Rollins Retirement Night. Fans at that night's game will receive replica 2008 World Champion rings.

Along with the recently retired Ryan Howard and Chase Utley, Rollins was part of the most fearsome infield in baseball from 2007 to 2011, when the team won five straight NL East titles. He finished a storied career with three All Star nods, 231 home runs, 470 stolen bases, 511 doubles, and a whopping 2,455 hits.
