Where could one possibly enjoy a filet mignon in the most sophisticated dining environment for only $15.95 or veal for only $11.95? When was the last time you experienced the elegance of an Italian restaurant with marble, crystal chandeliers, the finest china and fresh flowers and paid prices like that? Giuseppe Sena, owner of La Famiglia Ristorante in Philadelphia, can answer that. In 1976, 41 years ago, when his family first opened their elegant restaurant at 8 S. Front Street.
Last summer, to recognize the restaurant’s 40th anniversary, for two days a week they brought back their original menu with the original recipes AND original prices. For two months, guests stepped back in time as the Senas’ shared their gratitude by slashing their prices and, now, they are doing it again – but for four days a week. Just after the July 4th holiday until after Labor Day, they will offer their Nostalgia Menu on Monday through Thursday evenings starting at 5:30 p.m. and during lunch from Tuesday to Friday. Reservations are required.
Sena said, “It’s our way to say ‘thank you’ and to, perhaps, introduce our restaurant to new diners. People used to say there are only two restaurants in Philadelphia with old world charm, sophistication and outstanding food – French cuisine at Le Bec Fin and Italian cuisine at La Famiglia. Now there is only one. We are honored to receive great respect from guests who return year after year.”

The Sena family tradition of culinary excellence dates back to early 1947 when Carlo "Papa" Sena began to cook in postwar Naples. The family carried this experience across the Atlantic and opened La Famiglia in 1976 in the shell of a Colonial tea warehouse. With the help of his family, and a lot of hard work and dedication, Carlo turned La Famiglia into one of Philadelphia's top culinary institutions. Since their father retired from the kitchen in the early nineties, Carlo's two sons, Giuseppe and Gino, and now grandson Carlo have maintained the first-class image of La Famiglia that its long-time patrons recall from the early days.
