Macy's Closing Center City Philadelphia Store

PHILADELPHIA — The iconic Center City Philadelphia Macy's store is closing this year, according to officials.

Macy's, at 1300 Market St., is set to close in March, city officials said late Thursday afternoon.

Philadelphia's Director of Commerce Alba Martinez said Macy's informed city officials Thursday morning of the impending closure.

Located in the Wanamaker Building, the Center City Macy's is known for its massive pipe organ, the Christmas light show, and the Dickens Village, which tells the tale of "A Christmas Carol" through animatronics and narration.

That location opened in 2006.

In December 2023, two security guards were stabbed at the store, killing one and injuring another, and prompting the business to close for two days. Tyrone Tunnell in December 2024 pleaded guilty to the fatal stabbing of Eric Harrison, 27.

Martinez said the city will help workers at the soon-to-be-closed store with finding new employment.

She went on to say the Wanamaker Building could see retail, residential, or corporate space at the property in the future. The building is owned by TF Cornerstone.

Jessie Lawrence, Philadelphia's Director of Planning & Development, said the closure presents an opportunity to create a retail corridor on Market East.

Philadelphia City Councilmember said the closing announcement was not a complete surprise, as Macy's has planned to close 65 stores across the nation in malls, cities, and suburbs.
