Philadelphia Could Host 2026 World Cup Games

The United States, Canada, and Mexico won a joint bid to host the 2026 World Cup, and Philly is one of the cities that could host games.

PHILADELPHIA – FIFA announced Wednesday in Moscow that a joint United States-Canada-Mexico bid to host the 2026 World Cup has won approval. And Philadelphia could end up hosting some games of the world's biggest soccer tournament.

The United Bid between the North American nations received 65 percent of the vote from participating nations. A bid from Morocco received the second most votes with 33 percent.

Philly was floated among 16 other cities in the United States as potential game hosts. Other cities include New York, Miami, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, and Cincinnati. With the 17 United States cities included, a total of 23 cities have been thrown into the mix to host the 80 soccer matches in the tournament.

Sixteen cities will eventually be selected from the pool to host games of 48 teams.

According to U.S. Soccer, game cities will be chosen in 2020 or 2021.

It's the first time the World Cup will be held in the U.S. since 1994, NBC Sports reported.

The United Bid touted an estimated $14 billion in revenue would be generated from hosting the games in North American cities, all of which have existing stadiums in which games can be played, according to NBC Sports.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter to laud the winning bid between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

"The U.S., together with Mexico and Canada, just got the World Cup," Trump said on Twitter. "Congratulations - a great deal of hard work!"
