Phillies Name Charle Manuel As New Hitting Coach

The former manager who led the team to a 2008 World Series victory is replacing John Mallee as the hitting coach, the team said Tuesday.

PHILADELPHIA — Charlie Manuel is returning to the Philadelphia Phillies. The team announced the former manager who led the team to a 2008 World Series victory has rejoined the Phillies' coaching staff.

Manuel, 75, will take over the hitting coach role with the team, according to an announcement by the team Tuesday.

Manuel will take over the position from John Mallee through the rest of the 2019 season; Mallee has been "relieved of his duties," according to an announcement from the Phillies.

Manuel is rejoining the team after being fired in 2013. He was hired as the manager in 2005.

During his tenure, Manuel secured a World Series win and five-straight division titles.

Before Tuesday's announcement, Manuel was service as a senior advisor to Phillies general manager Matt Klentak.
