"Sociologists focus on how the world around us impacts our decisions," University of Indianapolis professor Amanda Miller, Ph.D., said. "What might be considered sinful in one location or at one point in time would be viewed as commonplace in others. For example, at one point in American history or even today among certain sub-groups or other places of the world, a woman wearing pants would be the height of scandal. At the same time, who you are often impacts whether others view you as sinful or not. Your ethnicity, nationality, gender, social class, or age, for example, might shift the public perception of the exact same behavior from 'youthful indiscretion' or 'minor quirk' to 'criminal' or 'innately evil.'"
