Philly Chef Named Best In Mid Atlantic At 2022 James Beard Awards
Chef Cristina Martinez of South Philly Barbacoa won Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic Wednesday night at the James Beard Awards In Chicago.
PHILADELPHIA — Another Philadelphia chef has joined the ranks of prestigious restaurateurs, chefs, and more as she won a James Beard Award Wednesday night.
The 2022 James Beard Award ceremony, dubbed the Oscars of the food world, was held Wednesday at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
Among the winners was Cristina Martinez of South Philly Barbacoa.

Martinez won Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic, naming her the best chef in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia.
Martinez was the only nominees from Philly to take home an award.

Other finalists from the city were Ellen Yin of High Street Hospitality Group (Fork, a.kitchen + bar, High Street Philly, and others) for Outstanding Restaurateur, as well as Jesse Ito of Royal Izakaya, and Chutatip "Nok" Suntaranon of Kalaya Thai Kitchen for Best Mid-Atlantic Chef.
In addition to winning, Martinez was one of several chefs chosen to serve tastings after the ceremony at Chicago’s Union Station.
