Philly Is Kind Of Terrible For Drivers, International Traffic Study Shows

We love to be mad when we drive and we pay some pretty darn high parking rates, according to the study from a German auto part manufacturer.

PHILADELPHIA – A Germany auto parts manufacturer conducted an international traffic study that examined driving factors in numerous cities the world over. And Philadelphia's stats are dismal in some areas.

kfzteile24, based in Berlin, Germany, released the results of its study, "Best and Worst Cities to Drive 2017," recently and we have the details on the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection's results.

According to the study, Philly is the fourth best city to drive in the United States. It falls behind Seattle, San Diego, and San Antonio and beats out cities such as New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Boston and a few others for the worst driving.

  • Congestion Level
  • Gasoline prices
  • Diesel prices
  • Public Transport Alternative
  • Cost of Parking
  • Downtown - Airport Speed
  • Air Pollution
  • Road Traffic Injuries
  • Road Quality
  • Road Rage

See that last one? We know you want to know where we land on the road rage scale.

Philly fared well internationally, ranked as the 42nd worst for road rage, but in the US Philly is the sixth worst for road rage.

Other factors where Philly lag include parking prices (we're ranked the third worst internationally and second worst nationally behind New York), road traffic injuries (again the second worst in the US behind NYC), and public transportation (57th best internationally, fifth best nationally).

The study examined several factors; congestion levels, public transport options, average cost of parking, cost of fuel, average speeds, levels of air pollution, accidents and fatalities, road quality and the frequency/perception of road rage. Any traffic delays or congestion caused by temporary construction work was not taken into account for this study. Once all factors were researched for 100 cities,a final score was calculated for each.

“Cars are an important accessory of modern life, and the means by which many use to get from A to B. Yet poor urban planning or a lack of civil education can make driving the most stressful experience of somebody’s day.” Thomas Kloubert, CMO of kfzteile24, said. “We hope that this study will act as a catalyst for those cities in the negative end of the ranking to invest in safer, cleaner and more efficient roads, and consider how methods adopted by higher scoring cities can be utilised in their own locations.”

The five worst cities for driving are Kolkata, India; Karachi, Pakistan; Lagos, Nigeria; Ulaanbaater, Mongolia; and Mumbai India.

The top five best are Dusseldorf, Germany; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Zurich, Switzerland; Tokyo, Japan; and Basel, Switzerland.

Stay safe out there all you Philly drivers.
