PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia man is in custody after authorities said he fatally shot his wife, then tried to take his own life over the weekend, authorities said.

Jose Luna, 59, of Philadelphia, is charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, and possessing an instrument of crime, Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and Rockledge Borough Police Chief Michael Schmalz said Monday.

Luna's charges stem from the shooting death of wife, 48-year-old Alisett Schubert.

Schubert was found suffering from gunshot wounds at about 10:05 p.m. Saturday at Huntington Pike and Filmore Streets in Rockledge Borough, authorities said.

According to prosecutors, Rockledge Borough Police were called to that area at that time after a SEPTA bus driver used his emergency system to report a shooting and provided a description of the shooter. Police found Schubert on the ground outside of her silver Nissan Murano, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to Abington Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The SEPTA driver told detectives that he was heading south on Huntington Pike when he approached a vehicle that was stopped in the road. He said he heard two or three "pops," then saw a man get out of the vehicle's front passenger seat.

The driver said the man then opened the driver’s side door, a woman fell out of the vehicle, and the man walked away from the vehicle, authorities said.

The driver pulled the bus over and called in the emergency, including a description of the man.

Philadelphia Police found Luna a mile away, and as they approached him, he put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger, but the firearm was out of ammunition, the DA's office said. Luna was taken into custody without incident.

Authorities said the firearm was registered to Schubert.

Luna is being held without bail at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 5.
