3 Hurt, 5 In Custody After West Philadelphia Shooting: Police

Police said about 30 shots were fired at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday during an Eid al-Fitr event in West Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Three people were shot and five people, including four juveniles, were taken into custody after a shooting during an Eid al-Fitr celebration in West Philadelphia Wednesday, according to police.

Police said the shooting occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on the 4700 block of Wyalusing Avenue in the Parkside neighborhood.

According to police, about 1,000 people were gathered at Clara Muhammad Square for the Ramadan celebration when about 30 gunshots rang out.

Police said two "factions" started shooting at one another, sending attendees of the event running.

Officers on scene stopped three males and a female who were running from the scene, and found firearms on them. The four, three of whom were juveniles and one of whom was an adult, were taken into custody, police said.

A 15-year-old boy was seen with a gun and was shot twice, once each in the shoulder and leg, by an officer who spotted the gun. The boy was taken into custody alive and is at a hospital, while the officer who shot him was placed on administrative duty during an investigation into the shooting.

Police said a 22-year-old man was also shot in the stomach during the incident. He is in stable condition. Additionally, a 15-year-old boy was shot in his hand, police said. He is also in stable condition.

Authorities were thankful that no one was killed in the shooting.

A 15-year-old girl was also struck by a police vehicle and suffered a broken leg as she was running from the area, police said.
