Reader Poll: Should The Eagles Build A New Stadium?

The Super Bowl champs recently floated the idea of building a new stadium or renovating the Linc.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Philadelphia Eagles have been on top of the world ever since their dominant victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl some six months ago. And as they prepare to defend their title, the organization is considering upgrading their home stadium.

What exactly those upgrades will look like, however, is up in the air, and the Birds have asked season ticket holders in a recent survey if they would prefer renovations to the Linc or a brand new stadium.

The question comes as the Eagles opened training camp last week and hoisted a massive new sign on the side of the stadium picturing the Lombardi trophy being hoisted during Super Bowl 59.

The Linc has hosted two out of the last three NFC championship games (and three out of the last eight), becoming one of the most easily recognizable "football cathedrals" in America in the process. And partly because the Eagles have won every single one of those games, it's become an inextricable part of Philadelphia lore and sports history, too.

It's unclear exactly how extensive the hypothetical renovations to the Linc would be. It's also not clear what direction the Birds would move in with a brand new stadium.

The Linc was built at the same time as the Phillies Citizens Banks Park, as both teams moved into their own homes after their shared home, Veterans Stadium, was demolished. The Linc officially opened in 2003, 32 years after the Eagles had left the Vet. If the Linc was replaced, that would likely mark a tenure of around the same amount of time, given it will take several years to construct a new stadium.

Some proponents of the idea of a new stadium have advocated for a dome or retractable roof, arguing that the raucous Philadelphia crowds would be even more deafening for opponents in a contained space.
