SEPTA Service Restored, Delays Likely After Regional Rail Train Derailment

Update: Starting at 3 p.m. Wednesday, all Regional Rail service will be restored, SEPTA announced. Residual delays throughout the evening are likely.

The cause of the train derailment remains under investigation.

PHILADELPHIA — Three Regional Rail lines are suspended, while others have significant delays and disruptions after a SEPTA train derailed early Wednesday in Philadelphia, officials said.

An outbound train on the Manayunk/Norristown Line derailed shortly after midnight at the 16th Street interlocking in North Philadelphia — a critical junction — SEPTA said.

There were 47 passengers on board, and no injuries were reported.

All Regional Rail lines have significant delays, while several remain suspended and others aren't making all stops. Repairs to minor track damage remained underway late Wednesday morning.

Service will be restored later in the day, but the timing is unknown, a SEPTA spokesperson told Patch.

Here are the impacts as of this writing:

• No service: Chestnut Hill East, Manayunk/Norristown and Fox Chase lines
• Inbound train lines ending at Fern Rock Transit Center: West Trenton, Lansdale/Doylestown and Warminster. Passengers can transfer to the B1 line to continue to Center City.
• Inbound trains terminated and outbound trains originated at Suburban Station: Airport, Wilmington/Newark, Media/Wawa, Trenton, Paoli/Thorndale, and Chestnut Hill West lines.

More than 80,000 passengers take the Regional Rail per weekday, according to SEPTA data. It has 13 different lines extending to Philadelphia's suburbs in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
