Temple's Acting President Dies After Falling Ill During Memorial Event

Acting Temple University President JoAnne A. Epps died after suddenly falling ill during a memorial event Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

PHILADELPHIA — Temple University's acting president died Tuesday, according to officials.

Acting President JoAnne A. Epps died after she suddenly fell ill during a memorial event Tuesday, the university said.

"It is with deep heartbreak that we write to inform you that Temple University Acting President JoAnne A. Epps suddenly passed away this afternoon," the school announced Tuesday afternoon.

Epps was taken to Temple University Hospital Tuesday afternoon after she became ill during the Charles L. Blockson Memorial Service at the Temple Performing Arts Center this afternoon, according to the school.

She was pronounced dead at about 3:15 p.m. at Temple University Hospital.

"There are no words that can describe the gravity and sadness of this loss. President Epps was a devoted servant and friend who represented the best parts of Temple," the school's announcement reads. "She spent nearly 40 years of her life serving this university, and it goes without saying her loss will reverberate through the community for years to come."

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Epps slumped over in her chair and was carried out by a uniformed officer.

The outlet reports the event's announcer asked if there was a doctor in the house.

Mayor Jim Kenney said he was "heartbroken" by Epps' death.

"I feel fortunate to have known her," he said on social media. "My heart is with the Temple community and JoAnne’s family and loved ones."

"Our hearts are heavy as we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and the Temple University community on the passing of President JoAnn Epps," the Temple University Police Association said on social media. "President Epps served Temple with grace, dignity, and unwavering dedication."

"I am truly devastated to learn of the passing of acting Temple University President JoAnne A. Epps," Philadelphia Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson said. "Not only was Epps a trusted leader at Temple, but she was well respected throughout the entire Philadelphia region. She provided Temple with stability during a time of great transition and throughout her more than 30 years of service to the university. I am praying for her family, the entire Temple University community, and our city as we grieve this tragic loss."

Epps was appointed as acting president in April and was the dean of Temple University Law School.

She served the Temple community for more than 30 years, according to the school.

Details of Epps' death have not been released.

"The days ahead will be difficult, but we will lean on one another as President Epps would want us to," the school said.
