'Bad Things Happen In Philadelphia,' Trump Says During Debate

The president said poll watchers were "thrown out" in Philly, but no polling places are open now and poll watchers haven't been certified.

PHILADELPHIA — President Donald Trump took a shot at Philadelphia with a claim about poll watchers in the city during Tuesday night's presidential debate.

The president and former Vice President Joe Biden sparred over various topics in Cleveland Tuesday night, including the coronavirus, healthcare, and the upcoming election.

When discussing the election, Trump said poll watchers in Philly were "thrown out" because "bad things happen in Philadelphia."

Trump also tweeted a similar claim earlier Tuesday, saying poll watchers were thrown out of polling places in Philadelphia after his son Eric Trump retweeted the claim.

Philadelphia does not have polling places open and poll watchers have not been certified yet. Rather, the city has opened satellite election offices to provide Philadelphia voters with easier access to register to vote and to vote by mail.

Philadelphia Deputy Commissioner Nick Custodio refuted Trump's claim in a statement.

"The Satellite Offices are not Polling Places," he said. "Poll watcher certificates have not been issued for any individuals for anything other than poll watching activities on Election Day at Polling Places."

He also said anyone not using the services at the satellite offices is not permitted inside them.

While Trump's claim about poll watchers has very little veracity, Philadelphia sports fan agreed that "bad things happen in Philadelphia" and weighed in with humor:
