The Shining (1980)
- Martin Scorsese calls it one of the scariest movies ever made. Stephen King declares it an abomination of his book. No matter which side of the hedge maze you fall on, everyone can agree that Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining is visually stunning, tremendously creepy and not quickly forgotten. Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), an out-of-work teacher and alcoholic, takes a job as the winter caretaker at a remote mountain resort in the hopes of putting his failing family life back together and writing the great American novel. Jack’s wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) is hopeful about this new opportunity but their son Danny (Danny Lloyd) is bothered by disturbing visions of his family’s future – and the hotel’s past. As the winter drags on and isolation mounts, Jack starts to fall victim to the hotel’s sinister powers – and Danny begins to hone his telepathic gifts. Directed by Stanley Kubrick. US. 1980. R. 144 minutes. Warner Bros. Digital projection.

- The year is 2017. After a global economic collapse, the U.S. is now ruled by a totalitarian government that controls the population with games shows. The most popular of all the shows, The Running Man, forces enemies of the state to run a gauntlet of mercenaries in an effort to win their freedom. So far, there have been few successes – but that was before framed policeman Ben Richards (Arnold Schwarzenegger) became a contestant. With its tongue planted firmly in its cheek, this adaptation of the sci-fi tale by Richard Bachman (AKA Stephen King) features a first-rate script by Steven E. de Souza (Die Hard, Commando) and a standout supporting cast that includes Maria Conchita Alonso, Yaphet Kotto, Jim Brown, Jesse Ventura, Dweezil Zappa, Mick Fleetwood, Professor Toru Tanaka, and Family Feud host Richard Dawson! Directed by Paul Michael Glaser. US. 1987. R. 101 minutes. Paramount. 35mm projection.
