Black Bear, Digging Through Trash, Continues To Move Through Chester Co.

Black bears are native to Pennsylvania and sightings are not cause for alarm, though residents should take some precautions.

WEST VINCENT TOWNSHIP, PA — The black bear originally spotted over the weekend in West Vincent Township continues to move through the area late Monday night into Tuesday, with additional sightings reported.

Home security footage captured the bear rummaging in at least one trash bin, pulling a bag out with his mouth before trotting off with it.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission has sent a team to the area to assist local police in monitoring the bear and keeping both humans and wildlife safe.

It's not clear exactly where the bear may be headed next, though sprawling natural areas abound nearby for the bear to thrive safely.

Black bears are native to Pennsylvania and their appearance should not warrant any concern, though their numbers are lower in the densely populated southeastern region.

Issues can arise if the bear becomes reliant upon humans, specifically human trash, as a food source.

Residents are asked to be mindful about leaving pet food outdoors and leaving their trash unsecured.

If you see the bear or have video footage of its location, call 911.
