PHOENIXVILLE, PA — Xfinity customers in the Phoenixville and East Pikeland areas are being targeted by scammers tricking local residents into paying for upgrades on "old" equipment.
Specifically, the scams identify residents who have equipment at least five years old.
The messages often originate from something identifying itself as "Xfinity Assistant."
"The messages claim that Xfinity is updating fiber optic cables in the area and that an employee needs to come to your home to replace your Xfinity Gateway equipment," East Pikeland police said. "Customers are then directed to call a phone number that closely resembles Xfinity's legitimate customer service number."
Scammers convince victims they are real Xfinity representatives by asking for details like names, phone numbers, and addresses to confirm identity.
However, the give away is when they ask for bank account and credit card information over the phone.
For legitimate replacement of Xfinity service equipment, this is not information you would need to give on the phone, police said.
Police urge residents to listen to their instincts and to only communicate sensitive information through official, confirmed Xfinity channels.
