The Phoenix Book Club, Phoenixville Public Library’s online book discussion group for adults of all ages, will meet on Zoom Monday, May 11 at 7:00 PM. The group will discuss Tim O’Brien’s award-winning novel, The Things They Carried. 

A classic work of American literature that has not stopped changing minds and lives since it burst onto the literary scene, The Things They Carried is a ground-breaking work of Vietnam War fiction and a meditation on war, memory, imagination, and the redemptive power of storytelling. In this landmark collection of stories, The Things They Carried depicts the men of Alpha Company: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and the character Tim O’Brien, who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of forty-three.

Phoenixville Public Library will host a free presentation, “The Welcome Home Project and Lenape Land Reparation”, on Wednesday, May 13 at 3:30 PM. The presentation will be given by students in Dr. Danielle Widmann Abraham's course, "Sacred Earth: Native Life, Land, and Religious Freedom,” at Ursinus College. Dr. Abraham is Associate Professor of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion, and Coordinator, Peace and Social Justice Studies, at Ursinus College. In the wake of centuries of forced removal from their native lands and oppression, the Lenape have continued to pursue their own form of resistance, part of which has resulted in the Federal recognition of the Delaware Tribe of Indians. Learn about the history and culture of the Lenape, their struggle in the face of colonialism, and how the Welcome Home project offers a possible avenue for reparations to pursue moving forward. This event is free and open to the public. The program will also be livestreamed on Zoom for those unable to attend in person.
