Phoenixville Public Library will host a free presentation, “Nonviolent Communication: Skills for Navigating Trying Times and Strengthening Relationships,” on Monday, August 24, 6:30 PM, at the Library. Cara Graver, Certified Holistic Health Counselor at The Cob Studio, will be the presenter. Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a process created by psychologist Marshall Rosenberg. It focuses on compassionate dialogue, helping people express themselves clearly and listen deeply through four key components: observations, feelings, needs, and requests. It can be seen as both a spiritual practice and a concrete set of skills which help us create life-serving families and communities. Learn how you can develop these skills in this free presentation. This event is free and open to the public. The program will also be livestreamed on Zoom for those unable to attend in person. Books on Tap, Phoenixville Public Library’s off-site book discussion group for adults in their 20s and 30s, will meet Tuesday, August 25, 7:00 PM, at Molly Maguire's Irish Restaurant &amp; Pub, 197 Bridge St., Phoenixville. The group will discuss Timothy Egan’s award-winning, bestselling book, A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan’s Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them. 

The Roaring Twenties--the Jazz Age--has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson. Stephenson was a magnetic presence whose life story changed with every telling. Within two years of his arrival in Indiana, he’d become the Grand Dragon of the state and the architect of the strategy that brought the group out of the shadows – their message endorsed from the pulpits of local churches, spread at family picnics and town celebrations. Judges, prosecutors, ministers, governors and senators across the country all proudly proclaimed their membership. But at the peak of his influence, it was a seemingly powerless woman – Madge Oberholtzer – who would reveal his secret cruelties, and whose deathbed testimony finally brought the Klan to their knees.

Phoenixville Public Library will host the AARP Smart Driver Refresher Class on Thursday, August 27 from 12:30 to 4:30 PM. The course offers participants an opportunity to learn how to drive more efficiently and safely. The course contains up-to-date information about changes in ourselves, our vehicles and our roads. Participants must have previously taken an 8-hour Smart Driver class in order to attend this refresher class. Cost is $20.00 for AARP members, $25.00 for non-members, payable by check or money order.
