Shusterman Leads Marvin In Chesco D-157 House Race

Democratic incumbent Melissa Shusterman garnered 60 percent of the votes, according to the Department of State report.

CHESTER COUNTY, PA —State Rep. Melissa Shusterman, a Democratic state representative, garnered 60.7 percent of the votes in a race against Republican Sarah Marvin, a small business for a two-year term to represent four municipalities in District 157, according to the Department of State.

Shusterman received 5,856 votes, including 4,241 in-person votes and 1,615 mail-in votes, according the Department of State report.

The report showed Marvin earned 39.3 percent of the votes, including 3,501 in-person votes and 291 mail-in votes.

The polls closed at 8 p.m.

The vast majority of the results should be counted by midday Wednesday, according to Chester County officials. Closer races take more time.

Winners are official 20 days after Election Day.

Under a new Pennsylvania redistricting map that is based on the 2020 census, the district covers Easttown, Tredyffrin, Willistown, and Schuylkill townships. The district covers 41.2 square miles and has a population of 62,926.

Shusterman, 55, resides in Schuylkill Township with her husband and son. She was first elected in 2018, unseating Republican Warren Kampf, who was first elected in 2010.

Marvin is a small business owner who specializes in providing learning support for cyber, homeschool, public and private students and SAT/ACT tutoring.

Marvin resides in Paoli with her husband and four children who range in age from middle school to college.

Shusterman: "Continue To Work For Common Sense Gun Laws"

Shusterman is a 1985 graduate of Conestoga High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Lafayette College, Easton; and a master’s degrees in history and film and video from American University.

Shusterman is a small business owner. Her hobbies include hiking, reading and gardening.
Shusterman told Patch that she supports banning assault weapons.

“As a mother, my heart breaks for the victims and families who have suffered from gun violence. I introduced House Bill 271 which would ban 3D printed guns in Pennsylvania,” Shusterman said.

"I will continue to work for common sense gun laws. I am proud to be endorsed by Moms Demand Action.”

Marvin: "Supports Stronger and Strickly Enforce Background Checks"

Marvin started and runs an intensive day program for homeschoolers, cyber schoolers and at risk students.

She is also a Deacon at St John's Presbyterian Church, Devon; a former board member of Conestoga Generals and Wayne Wildcats Youth Football and Cheer Organization for over four years; and a former active PTO Member at Devon Elementary School.

Marvin said she loves to learn and teach. Her other interests are spending time with family, baking and gardening.

Marvin told Patch lawmakers need to do two things simultaneously: they need to protect gun owners who obtain and use guns lawfully, while prosecuting and punishing those who obtain and use guns unlawfully.

“I support stronger and strictly enforced background checks, hold periods for 18-21 year olds, tough penalties and prosecution of straw-purchasers, and effective security measures in public schools, Marvin said.
