Facetime Theatre will open their 2019-2020 mainstage season with the 2015 Best Musical Tony Winner FUN HOME. Directed by Lisa Starczewski, the emotionally heartbreaking and darkly comedic musical begins performances on September 13 and continues through September 28.
Based on the graphic memoir of the same name by Alison Bechdel, FUN HOME tells the story of Alison’s exploration of her own sexuality, her complex relationship with her gay father and her upbringing in a funeral home. The contemporary musical, with music by Jeanine Tesori (Caroline or Change, Shrek the Musical, Violet), and book and lyrics by Lisa Kron (2.5 Minute Ride, Well), was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, winning 5, including Best Musical, Best Score of a Musical and Best Book of a Musical.

The character of Alison is played by three actors. 43-year-old “Alison,” played by area favorite Kate Nice, is the play’s narrator, delving into her past in order to better understand her family and herself; 19-year-old “Medium Alison,” played by Shaina Egan, is a student at Oberlin College who is discovering her sexuality; and 10-year-old “Small Alison,” alternately played by Isabelle Gottfried and Josie Nice, is a child struggling to meet her father’s expectations.
Steve Carrasco plays Alison’s demanding and conflicted father, Bruce. Her mother, Helen, is played by Liz Wheeler. Michael Brignola and Trevor Heron portray Alison’s brothers, Christian and John. The cast is completed with Andrew Ball, who portrays several male roles, and Lauren Dougherty as Joan.
The production team includes music director Jessica Potts, assistant director and choreographer Katie McGrier, costume designer Sharon Dougherty, set and prop designer Heidi Swartz and stage manager Jessica Corropolese.
