John Carpenter’s 1998 film stars James Woods as the leader of a group of professional vampire hunters, who just might have discovered a vampire immune to sunlight. Raunchy and graphic, with the usual Carpenter machismo on display. This is pre-CGI, so get ready for lots and lots of practical effects. Great fun. Inspired by
Westerns, the film is set mostly in a daytime desert. Rated R. 108 min. Tasty 35mm presentation.

Director Mamoru Oshii tells a distinctive visual story in this 1995 adaptation of the cyberpunk manga. Mixing CGI and traditional animation, the result is a smart sci-fi tale that blends high-octane action with high-minded ideas. Not to mention female cyborg detective. What more do you need to know? Not rated. 83 min. Delightful digital screening.
