Norristown High-Speed Line Will Head Into Upper Merion, Not Along 202

SEPTA has finalized their recommendations that the Norristown High-Speed Line be extended into Upper Merion. What do you think?

NORRISTOWN, PA -- Public officials and SEPTA are recommending that the Norristown High Speed Line extend its terminus into Upper Merion Township.

The recommendation selects the “PECO, Turnpike, First Avenue” extension from among five other possible routes, according to the Times Herald.

SEPTA established the route possibilities based on public hearings, public input, Route 202 businesses, and other area residents, according to KOP Rail, the project’s website.

Residents have launched a Change.org petition to fight the proposal, citing noise pollution and not enough input from local residents.

A route along Route 202 would’ve made that area feel too “urbanized,” the report states. That route would have used an elevated, concrete rail bed in the median between opposing lanes of traffic.

The proposal, which will be finalized at upcoming public meetings, will branch off from the existing high speed line, follow the PECO power line right of way, and then the Pennsylvania Turnpike until it reaches Upper Merion, officials said.

It will also loop around the back parking lot of the King of Prussia Mall, along First Avenue and then to North Gulph Road.

The public meeting schedule is included below:
