Subtle Nod To Phoenixville In New Rocky Movie, 'Creed'

Pretty cool for Phoenixville - and Phoenixville Area High School.

The trailer for the new Rocky boxing movie, Creed, includes an easter egg for residents of the Steel City.

At one point, Rocky and Creed are training together, hitting a punch bag from a ceiling hook. In the background, the walls are decorated with a tapestry of posters for fight nights and boxing events from around the area.

If you look closely, one of the posters advertises for an amateur boxing night at Phoenixville Area High School.

The poster is dated “Saturday, February” with the rest of the date obscured. “Amateur Boxing, Phoenixville High School, Jim Deoria, Bernie Winters,” the rest of the poster reads.

Deoria and Winters were real fighters with real local connections. Deoria was inducted into the Pennsylvania Boxers Hall of Fame in 2004 and worked as a policeman after he retired.

He also headed up the Phoenixville Area Police Athletic League’s boxing program for area youth. It was based on Main Street in the Civic Center.

The new Rocky movie tells the story of the son of Apollo Creed, one of the characters of an earlier Rocky movie that died during a match.

The poster can be seen at the 1:52-1:53 mark.
