Ecosystems Science and Jr. Geologist Summer Camps

Two awesome hands-on ecology and geology science summer camps for students in grades 2 - 5 at Sewickley Academy and Winchester Thurston.

Ecosystems Science Program

  • Who? Students entering grades 2 - 3
  • What? Ecosystems Science Program - (Grades 2 - 3)
  • When and Where?
    Sewickley Academy June 15 – 19, 2015. 9am – 12pm.

Come celebrate the wonder of our natural world as we unravel the mysteries of ecosystems through a variety of experiments, activities, games, and crafts! Our week begins with an exploration of the fascinating ecological history of our world during which we will discover how history has influenced the types of animals and plants that you find here, as well as in other parts of the world. We will discover amazing plant and animal adaptations and the sometimes extreme strategies of living things to survive!
There are challenges and problems to solve, and we need the help of our young scientists to design an anti-venom for a mock venomous snakebite, to build miniature machines powered by solar and wind energy, and to devise a plan to make our water safe after an oil spill in our model.
We will decipher the secrets of soil with scientific tests and learn all about our local waterways. We will peer through microscopes at the very small, fly a very large solar balloon into the sky, and much more!

Are you mad for minerals, crazy for crystals, and frenzied for fossils? Join Junior Geologists for an action-packed week of geological exploration! We’ll discover the unique characteristics of the rocks, minerals, crystals and fossils in our area and beyond.
Together, we’ll learn how to uncover the mysteries and history of a rock with scientific tests. We’ll grow our very own glowing crystals, crack giant geodes, recreate volcanic eruptions, and learn about the important resources found in the earth. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in alive during the gold rush? Get ready to travel back in time; we’ll transform our classroom into a Californian gold and mineral panning camp from 1848 for a day!
We’ll also discover the unique local geology of our area and the rocks and fossils that are millions of years old! We’ll learn how our continent and the location of Pennsylvania has changed over the ages and which types of rocks you find here. In a hands-on fossil hunt, we will search through and crack open ancient local rocks to expose fossils inside that have not seen the light of day for millions of years!
