The 17th annual Western Pennsylvania Garden & Landscape Symposium, presented by Penn State Extension, Phipps Conservatory and Shady Side Academy, will be held Saturday, April 14, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Shady Side Academy’s Hillman Center for Performing Arts in Fox Chapel. Internationally acclaimed educators and authors will treat attendees to an entire day of presentations.
These horticultural experts will share their knowledge on a wide variety of topics including Dan Hinkley on Forgotten Elements of Good Design: Texture, Movement and Fragrance and Plant Marriages: Exceptional Combinations of Foliage and Flowers, Ruth Clausen – Shrubs through the Season, Barbara Pleasant – Wiser Living through Gardening: Using Edibles in the Landscape, and Kirk Brown – Small Garden Smarts. The Symposium includes breakfast and lunch as well as plenty of time to shop for plants and garden-related products in the newly expanded Garden Marketplace.
The Garden Marketplace, held in the adjacent Shady Side Academy Ice Rink, is free and open to the public, as well as those registered for the Symposium, from 8: 00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Marketplace will feature unusual, hard-to-find annuals, perennials and shrubs, heirloom vegetable plants and seeds, natives, carnivorous plants, bonsai specimens, tools and garden accessories. Browsing and shopping the Garden Marketplace has never been easier, as it is entirely indoors, located in the Ice Rink on the Shady Side Senior School campus.
