Allegheny Co. Coronavirus Case Spike Continues

Here are the latest coronavirus case increases for Allegheny County and southwestern Pennsylvania.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department on Monday reported one new coronavirus deaths. The county death toll now stands at 459.

For the second straight day, the county reported 500 or more new cases. Monday's total was 500, down slightly from Sunday's single-day record of 527 cases. But the numbers represent the largest two-day total of cases since the outbreak began in March.

County health department director Dr. Debra Bogen called the continued increase in new COVID-19 cases "beyond concerning."

"This past week, I joined with the chief medical officers of our region’s health systems to talk about our growing concerns,” Bogen said on Sunday. “Despite our cautionary messages, the number of cases is continuing to increase rapidly. While we are better prepared today than when we first began seeing cases in March, we must still be proactive in reducing the spread of the virus.”

There have been 1,656 hospitalizations in the county during the outbreak.

With 5,912 cases in Westmoreland County, 2,928 in Washington County, 2,829 in Butler County and 2,782 in Beaver County and, that brings the total number of cased to 34,977 when Allegheny County numbers are included.

According to the state Department of Health, there have been 828 deaths in the region from the virus: Four hundred and fifty-nine in Allegheny County, 144 in Beaver County, 133 in Westmoreland County, 49 in Washington County and 43 in Butler County.
