Allegheny County Again Tops 1,000 New Coronavirus Cases

Here are the latest coronavirus case numbers for Allegheny County and southwestern Pennsylvania.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department on Tuesday reported 1,059 confirmed and probable new coronavirus cases. There have been 41,333 cases since the outbreak began in March, up from 40,874 on Monday.

The county reported10 new coronavirus deaths. The county death toll now stands at 675, up from 665 on Monday.

The 569 confirmed cases came from 2,395 new tests - a positivity rate of 23 percent. For comparison purposes, the latest positivity rate for tests across Pennsylvania is 16 percent, state officials said.

There have been 2,580 hospitalizations during the outbreak.

With 17,522 cases in Westmoreland County, 6,662 in Washington County, 6,643 in Butler County and 6,256 in Beaver County, that brings the total number of cases to 78,416 when Allegheny County numbers are included. That's up from 76,920 from Monday.

According to the state Department of Health, there have been 1,381 deaths in the region from the virus: Six hundred and seventy-five in Allegheny County, 294 in Westmoreland County, 192 in Beaver County, 125 in Butler County and 95 in Washington County. That's up from 1,358 from Monday.

Because of the growing number of coronavirus cases and deaths across Pennsylvania, new mitigation measures went into effect on Saturday. Until Jan. 4, the state is restricting indoor dining and closing gyms, movie theaters and bowling alleys, as well as limiting gatherings and suspending youth sports.
