Allegheny County Reports Grim Weekend Coronavirus Case Numbers
As the coronavirus vaccine began arriving in Pittsburgh, a disturbing number of new cases were reported in Allegheny County.
PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department on Monday reported 1,647 confirmed and probable new coronavirus cases over the weekend. There have been 40,874 cases since the outbreak began in March.
The county reported five new coronavirus deaths. The county death toll now stands at 665.
The 1,647 confirmed cases came from 5,106 new tests - a positivity rate of 32 percent. For comparison purposes, the latest positivity rate for tests across Pennsylvania is 14 percent, state officials said.

With 16,344 cases in Westmoreland County, 6,430 in Washington County, 6,320 in Butler County and 6,052 in Beaver County, that brings the total number of cased to 6,920 when Allegheny County numbers are included.
According to the state Department of Health, there have been 1,358 deaths in the region from the virus: Six hundred and sixty-five in Allegheny County, 289 in Westmoreland County, 189 in Beaver County, 123 in Butler County and 92 in Washington County.

Because of the growing number of coronavirus cases and deaths across Pennsylvania, new mitigation measures went into effect on Saturday. For the next three weeks, the state is restricting indoor dining and closing gyms, movie theaters and bowling alleys, as well as limiting gatherings and suspending youth sports.
