Major Retailer Meijer Could Be Eyeing Entry Into Pittsburgh Market

PITTSBURGH, PA — A retailer with a large selection of grocery items could be eyeing an entry into the Pittsburgh market.

The Michigan-based Meijer chain is scouring the Pittsburgh area looking for possible store locations, according to a Pittsburgh Business Times report citing unidentified sources. Meijer has not commented on whether it has an interest in opening a store in Western Pennsylvania.

A Forbes profile of the chain states that Meijer is a family-owned grocery chain operating in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin. Its supercenter stores offer groceries but also have departments such as fashion, automotive, home decor, health and beauty care, pharmacy, electronics and banking.

According to its website, the closest Meijer location to Pittsburgh is in Boardman, Ohio, about 60 miles away.

Meijer's potential arrival comes on the heels of a recent Business Times report that Wegmans, a popular New York-based grocery chain, soon could open its first Pittsburgh-area store. Wegmans reportedly is on the verge of building a store at Cranberry Springs, the mixed-use development along Route 228 near Interstate 79.
