PITTSBURGH, PA — For the second time this week, the closure of a national retailer with a Pittsburgh location has been announced.
Macy's announced earlier this week that is shuttering its store at the struggling Pittsburgh Mills Mall in Frazer on April 26. It's one of 14 stores in 12 states that the department store chain will close next as part of an ongoing downsizing operation.
Now, Painted Tree Boutiques has announced that it has closed all of its stores. The shutdown became effective on April 13.
The retailer's sole Pennsylvania location was at The Waterfront in Homestead in the space once occupied by another business that failed - Bed Bath & Beyond.
According to WANE-TV in Fort Wayne Indiana, the company issued the following statement on the store closures:
"It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude that we share the news that Painted Tree Boutiques has closed all of its store locations. This decision has not come lightly, and it represents the end of a chapter that has meant everything to us.
"To our shoppers — you have made every single day worthwhile. You came to us not just to shop, but to discover, to support local makers, and to find something truly one-of-a-kind.
"To our dedicated team members — past and present — your commitment, creativity, and care have shaped everything we’ve accomplished. You showed up every day with kindness and purpose, and we are deeply thankful for every hour you gave to this community.
"The retail landscape has changed in ways none of us could have fully anticipated. Rising costs, shifting market conditions, and the evolving nature of how people shop have presented challenges that, despite our best efforts and our community’s unwavering support, we have not been able to overcome. We are heartbroken by this outcome.
"Painted Tree was never just a store. It was a gathering place, a launchpad for dreamers, and a testament to the power of community. Thank you for being part of our story.
Painted Tree housed several different vendor spaces — including clothing, gifts and accessories — within its main store.
According to the retailer's website, the brand began in 2015 as a vintage market in Bryant, Arkansas, and quickly grew into an opportunity for thousands of individuals to build their own stores and “live out their entrepreneurial dreams.”
In recent years, Painted Tree had expanded to approximately 35 locations in 15 states.
It is unclear what business will fill the vacated space at The Waterfront.
