PITTSBURGH, PA, — Pittsburgh Public Schools directors have approved a major reorganization plan that will result in many school closures.

District official estimate the plan could avoid more than $100 million in future facility costs while allowing for more than $103 million in investments in modernized learning spaces over the next seven years.

“The approval of the Future-Ready Facilities Plan represents a transformational investment in the future of our students, schools, and communities,” Superintendent Wayne Walters said in a statement.

“This plan is about far more than buildings. It is about creating equitable opportunities, strengthening academic experiences, and ensuring every student has access to learning environments that support success in college, career, and life.”

The schools targeted for closure include:

The approved plan outlines a phased implementation process that will occur over multiple years. Year one school closures would take place at the end of the 2026–27 school year, with
students transitioning to their new schools beginning in the 2027–28 school year.

The phased timeline is intended to provide students, families, and staff with time to prepare for successful
transitions, district officials said.
