'Dangerous Heat' Will Afflict Pittsburgh Area For Days

The first significant heat wave of the summer could pose a threat to people, the National Weather Service warns.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Hazardous heat conditions are moving into Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania - and they won't be leaving any time soon.

The National Weather Service has has termed the conditions "dangerous" and has issued a heat advisory from 11 a.m. Tuesday until 10 p.m. Friday. Heat index values from the afternoon into early evening will range from 98 to 105 degrees.

Conditions won't improve much after nightfall, with warm and muggy conditions persisting. Low temperatures will be in the low 70s.

Here's a day-by-day look at what you can expect:

Temperatures "cool down" on Independence Day on Saturday with an expected high of only 91. On Sunday, the anticipated high is 89. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday that could keep the temperatures down.

Allegheny County has activated a Code Red Heat Advisory for Tuesday and Wednesday because of high temperatures that could pose a threat to vulnerable people.

To find a cooling center in the county, residents can call 211 or visit southwest.pa211.org/summer-resources/. Communities are welcome to submit additional cooling center locations if they are not listed at southwest.pa211.org/agency-partners/ .

As part of the heat response, the county Department of Human Services and partner agencies will check on older adults, including outreach by home-delivered meals drivers and care management workers

As temperatures continue to rise, Pittsburgh CitiParks has activated five senior centers through Thursday. To assist people in staying safe during the extreme heat, each cooling center will be open from 8 a,m,-7-p,m. daily.

The weather service is advising people to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

People also should take precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
