Former Pittsburgh-Area U.S. House Member Dies

PITTSBURGH, PA — Former state senator and U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy of Upper St. Clair has died.

His death was announced on Sunday in a social media post by the Allegheny County Republican Committee.

"It is with a heavy heart that we share, Congressman Tim Murphy passed away," the post stated.

"Throughout his years of public service, he dedicated himself to representing his constituents and serving our country with conviction and commitment. We are grateful for his contributions and the lasting impact he made on his community and our nation.

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. May they find comfort during this difficult time."

The statement provided no details on how Murphy, 73, died.

Washington County Commissioner Nick Sherman, a former Murphy, aide, posted the following statement on Facebook:

"Tim was a true statesman who cared deeply about the people he represented. Whether you agreed with his policies or not, no one could deny his unwavering commitment to his constituents or the tireless work ethic he brought to public service every single day. He was one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever known."

A onetime psychologist, Murphy was elected to the state senate in 1996 and served there until being elected to the U.S. House. He served in congress from 2003 until 2017.

He resigned in October 2017 after reports the staunch abortion opponent had suggested his mistress get an abortion amid a pregnancy scare. His resignation also came amid accusations from employees that he was verbally abusive toward them.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately available Monday.
