Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued For Pittsburgh, Western PA

The National Weather Service is warning of potentially dangerous weather conditions in and around Pittsburgh today and tonight.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The National Weather Service has issued a wide-ranging severe thunderstorm for Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana.

The watch is in effect until 8 p.m.

The weather service says to expect storms with wind gusts as high as 70 mph, scattered hail up to ping pong ball size and isolated tornadoes.

Additionally, a flood watch is in effect for Pittsburgh and the rest of Allegheny County, along with Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

The flood watch is in effect until 11 p.m.

The weather service says there is the potential for areas to see swaths of heavy rain due to trailing thunderstorms. Rainfall rates in some area could be as much as three to five inches per hour.

Because of the predicted bad weather, Western Pennsylvania amusement attractions Kennywood, Sandcastle and Idlewild are closed for the day.
