Pittsburgh Restaurant Hit With Consumer Alert

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department has issued a consumer alert for Maya Sushi, on Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill, for numerous health code violations.

A recent inspection found too many to count fresh mouse droppings on the floor around a display cooler and on the floor behind the cook line.

There were 15-20 mouse droppings on the floor behind the water heater and 15-20 droppings within the fryer cabinet.

A food item's temperature was well over the cold holding temperature of 41 degrees or below. Two containers of tofu cubes were stored in a cooler at 55 degrees.

Another violation were containers of seaweed and imitation crab mix stored directly underneath loosely covered pans of raw salmon in the cooler below the primary sushi prep line.

Additionally, uncovered containers of avocado and celery were stored beneath a cooler used for raw fish.

• Remove all rodent droppings from all affected areas and disinfect. Disinfection procedures provided during inspection.
• Contract with a certified pest operator for onsite weekly treatment for no less than six weeks and retain service reports for review.
• Service all refrigeration units and retain service reports for review.
• Secure at least one additional Certified Food Protection Manager and Certified Food Handler.
