Well-Known Pittsburgh Sports Announcer Dies

A celebrated voice on the Pittsburgh sports scene for decades has passed away. Get the details here.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Bill DiFabio, one of most renowned figures in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania sports broadcasting and writing, has died.

DiFabio died on Monday after battling health problems for several years.

According to the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, DiFabio was president of Sportscall,the largest independent radio network in the country, serving 60 radio stations in five states and covering the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins.

He hosted several talk shows across both radio and television with KDKA, WTAE, WWSW, KBL, He served as public address announcer for the Steelers for seven years, the University of Pittsburgh for two years and the former Pittsburgh Piranhas for one season.

Additionally, he was the public address voice of the Washington Wild Things minor league baseball team from 2002 until his retirement in 2022.

He also was a sports columnist for the Washington Observer-Reporter for 10 years.

Additionally, he also was the former announcer for several Wheeling University athletics. During his 18 years behind the microphone for Wheeling, DiFabio would call numerous Wheeling Cardinal basketball, football, and volleyball games.

"Bill DiFabio will always be remembered for his famous voice and the life he brought to sporting events across southwestern Pennsylvania and the tri-state region," said Wheeling University Athletic Director Carrie Hanna. "He brought a vibrant energy to every Cardinal athletic event that he announced, ensuring each student-athlete felt special every time they stepped on the field."

Funeral arrangements were not immediately available.
