Measles Case Surfaces In Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, PA —For the first time since 2019, a person has tested positive for measles in Allegheny County.

An unvaccinated patient at UPMC Children's Hospital in Lawrenceville has been diagnosed with the virus, UPMC officials said on Thursday.

"With the guidance of the Allegheny County Department of Health, everyone who may have been exposed to this patient at UPMC Children's Hospital is being notified," UPMC said in a statement. "There is no ongoing risk of contracting measles at the facility related to this patient."

The health department said in its own statement that the individual who contracted measles visited the hospital on two occasions, Aug. 12 and Aug. 18. UPMC will be calling patients who have been identified as exposed on those two days with further instructions.

The person with measles was not from Allegheny County and the health department has confirmed with UPMC that the individual currently is isolated. The health department stated that it cannot provide additional information because of privacy reasons.

The health department noted that people who are not vaccinated are most at-risk for infection. The health department advises that anyone in the exposure area who has not had two doses of Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) Vaccine to call their health care provider for information on taking the next steps.

The local diagnosis comes as the number of measles cases nationwide continues to rise.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 2,566 confirmed cases of measles reported in the United States this year as of Aug. 13. That's already more than the 2,289 confirmed measles cases reported for the full year in 2025.
