UPMC Donates Medical Trauma Kits To Pittsburgh Police

PITTSBURGH, PA — UPMC is donating 229 medical trauma kits to the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.

Different from first aid kits, medical trauma kits are used for severe, life-threatening emergencies such as gun shot wounds, deep stabbings or severe falls in which fatal blood loss can occur.

The donation will equip police vehicles and personnel with:

• 160 medical trauma kits in every front-line police patrol vehicle, which contain 2 tourniquets, chest seals, emergency trauma dressings, trauma sheers and hemostatic gauze.

• 65 individual medical trauma kits for SWAT officers and tactical paramedics.

"Every second matters in a medical emergency and when our police are the first on the scene, they'll now have access to medical trauma kits to start providing critical care until EMS arrives," Mayor Corey O'Connor said in a statement. "I'd like to thank UPMC for once again stepping up and investing in our first responders so that they can help provide life-saving support to our communities."

In addition to the donation of the initial kits, UPMC will also provide training for officers in use of the kits and acute care skills, as well as replenish the kits as needed to keep the supplies maintained.
