ALLEGHENY COUNTY, PA — Balloons no longer are permitted in all nine county parks.
The new policy, which was announced Thursday on social media, is effective immediately.
"The use of balloons, including helium-filled, latex, or water balloons are prohibited within the parks," a post on the parks Instagram page stated.
"This includes decorative or prop uses at shelters, park facilities, wedding venues, and all events hosted within the parks. In addition, the release of balloons and sky lanterns is prohibited."
Parks officials said the decision is in direct response to frequent litter and debris left from balloon brought into the parks by visitors.
"This litter and debris are a threat to our wildlife and requires substantial cleanup efforts from maintenance crews and volunteers annually."
The parks department did not indicate what penalties, if any, would be imposed for anyone smuggling balloons into a county park.
