PITTSBURGH, PA — Thousands of people remained without power Friday morning as severe storms hit Western Pennsylvania Thursday night, brining with them damaging winds that downed trees and and torrential downpours that triggered flash flooding.
As of 7:45 a.m. Thursday, Duquesne Light, which services most of the Pittsburgh area, was reporting more than 22,000 customers still without service. First Energy still had 85,000 reported outages in Pennsylvania.
In a social media post, Duquesne Light said it "is working around the clock to restore power as quickly and safely as possible after severe weather caused significant damage Thursday evening." Mutual assistance crews have been called in.
The outages have caused some schools and some entire school districts to delay classes, cancel them altogether or switch to remote learning for the day.
The National Weather Service warned that additional storms are anticipated again today and tonight, continuing the threats for damaging wind gusts, hail and localized flash flooding in heavy downpours.
