PennDOT is launching a $14.3 million flood-mitigation and roadway reconstruction project there, aiming to reduce frequent shutdowns that currently divert about 43,000 vehicles whenever the river rises.
2. Man Shot During 2024 Trump PA Assassination Attempt Dies (patch.com) — Pittsburgh readers are learning that 76-year-old James Copenhaver has died at Allegheny General Hospital from complications of wounds suffered in the 2024 assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally. Tributes from his family and Trump highlight his military service, devotion to country, and the bravery he showed protecting his loved ones during the shooting.
3. Pittsburgh cultural institutions put on stunning free performance Downtown with 'Landing Ovation' (triblive.com) — Downtown Pittsburgh arts lovers just got a free preview of the upcoming seasons from Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and Confluence Theater during a 90-minute "Landing Ovation" performance at Arts Landing. Crowds spread out on the lawn for opera favorites, ballet excerpts from "Giselle" and "The Nutcracker," and big musical-theater numbers, all backed by the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra and set against the city skyline.
4. Pittsburgh city search warrant: DA speaks about investigation (wtae.com) — Pittsburgh residents should know that Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala is investigating former Mayor Ed Gainey's administration over alleged misuse of city P-cards and no-bid contracts, amid a reported $50 million annual budget shortfall. A recent city search warrant produced thousands of financial records now under forensic review, and Zappala says serious, potentially chargeable issues and unaccounted-for funds are still being uncovered.
5. Remake Learning celebrates start of 20th year in Pittsburgh (cbsnews.com) — Pittsburgh families and educators are at the heart of Remake Learning's 20th-year kickoff at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, where dozens of groups showed off hands-on learning activities. The network announced a new "Let's Play Pittsburgh" initiative to fund playful public installations, like interactive features at bus stops, and continues offering grants that support creative learning projects across local museums, libraries, parks and schools.
