FAYETTE COUNTY, PA — A landslide on the Great Allegheny Passage Saturday claimed the life of one bicyclist and left another cyclist injured.
The victim was a 76-year-old woman from Florida, according to the Fayette County Coroner's office. Her identity has not been released.
The condition of the other person was not immediately available.
The landslide occurred near mile marker 88 and prompted Ohiopyle State Park to close the segment of the passage between Ohiopyle and Connellsville.
A message on the passage website stated, "We are absolutely devastated. Our hearts are with the family and loved ones of the bicyclist who lost her life, and extend our hopes for recovery to the bicyclist who was injured."
Connellsville Mayor Greg Lincoln posted the following statement on Faceboo:
"As many of you know, a terrible accident occurred on the bike trail right outside the city . A couple, enjoying a beautiful ride on the trail, were caught in a landslide. Unfortunately, a life was lost and someone else was significantly injured.
"I won't release any more information on an ongoing incident. However, the couple and their family are in the thoughts and prayers of my family and everyone in Connellsville. I would like to thank the first responders and everyone who responded to this accident to help. I ask everyone to please keep them in your thoughts and prayers too."
Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources are investigating the incident.
